Taming my Tongue

When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.  Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.     ~James 3 3:6

So I have always had a spicy ( Iguess would be the right term) mouth.  This has caused many fights between Greg and I for me not being able to just shut my mouth.  I have prayed about this in the past and have only just this morning realized that I have been able to tame my tongue (or bite it a lot!) lately!  A while ago I

listened to Joyce Meyer's Me and My Big Mouth and loved it!  I had never realized the impact our words have on one another.  "The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing." Proverbs 12:18

I have always known that I am not the best with words.  Things come out when they shouldn't, I get words mixed up ( instead of infertility drugs I said infidelity drugs, just one of many...) and I have even been known to "put my foot in my butt."  (Another mix up on my part!)  Although these can be funny, some of my words have been painful, tore people down, and hurt those that I love most.

Last night Greg was saying how what I was doing was wrong (he later came back to say he was being hypercritical- we were both wrong) but instead of picking a huge fight and saying things that I can't take back.  I realized that I had been able to do this for a long time now!  What an answer to prayer!

Yes there are things that I want to say so bad sometimes to people, but knowing that I am not tearing them down is so much better in the long run!  So today, I challenge you to try to bite your tongue when you have that urge to say something sharp, or spicy!  :)  And if you get a chance, read (or better yet, listen to) Joyce's Me and My Big Mouth
